Breaking Down Barriers for Mental Health Awareness Week
October 5-12, 2026 is Mental Health Awareness Week. At Mental Health America, our focus is always on mental health and wellness. During Mental Health Awareness Week, we want to remind everyone that it’s OK to not be OK. The main purpose of this week is to educate people about mental health conditions.
Just like physical health, our minds need care and attention. About 1 in 5 adults live with a mental health condition like anxiety or depression. However, many people stay quiet because they feel ashamed or confused.

It’s time to break down those barriers to self-care. When we talk openly, we make it easier for people to get help early. Getting help early leads to faster healing and a better life.
This observance reminds us that mental health is a normal part of wellness. It is always okay to ask for support when life feels overwhelming.
Here are three simple ways you can participate this October:
- Check in on yourself: Click here to take a free, private mental health screening.
- Learn the facts: Read about mental health to better understand what others are going through. You can start by reading and downloading our free handbook for coping with everyday life.
- Start a conversation: Talk to a friend or family member about how they are really doing.
Your mental health matters today and every day. If you need support, you can call or text 988 for free, confidential help, or reach out to us at Mental Health America in Montgomery by calling 334-262-5500.
